Red Kite

Click Me
Location: Rhayader Date: 30/08/2010
Scientific Name: Milvus milvus Pic By: Mark
Family: Bird of Prey Size: 63cm
ISO: 400 Gender: U
Equipment: Canon 50D/100-400L Lens Wingspan: 185cm
Description: The Red Kite is a large bird of prey, part of the same family as eagles, buzzards and harriers. This is a relatively rare bird of Europe and Northwest Africa.

Here in the UK the population of this bird was down to a staggering handful of pairs in Wales. But due to reintroductions using German and swedish birds, populations are growing in both Scotland, Buckinghamshire, and the Chilterns. They have now been spreading over much of the UK. Most recently a population of 100 welsh birds has been agreed to begin reintroduction to Ireland, around the Wicklow Mountains area.

Because this bird is a scavenger, it is particularly prone to illegal poisoning, and shooting.
